Key Purpose
A reputable boutique hotel in Freetown is looking for the accountant to support the hotel’s finance and accounting operations by maintaining accurate financial records, preparing reports, processing payments, monitoring revenue and expenses, and ensuring compliance with internal controls and statutory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Records & Reporting
- Maintain accurate daily, weekly, and monthly accounting records, including journal entries and supporting schedules.
- Reconcile general ledger, bank, cash, revenue, supplier, customer, payroll, and credit card accounts.
- Perform account balancing and resolve discrepancies, posting errors, billing differences, and unsupported transactions.
- Reconcile POS reports, credit card settlements, and bank receipts to ensure all payments are properly recorded and collected.
- Monitor outstanding collections from guests, corporate clients, travel agents, and event customers.
- Support monthly reporting, month-end/year-end closing, and escalate unresolved issues to Accounts Manager.
Revenue & Cost Control
- Reconcile daily sales from rooms, food and beverage, events, and other hotel revenue streams.
- Review cashier reports, POS records, guest bills, and payment receipts.
- Monitor hotel expenses and ensure they are properly authorised and documented.
- Assist in tracking departmental costs and identifying variances against budget.
Accounts Payable & Receivable
- Process supplier invoices, payment vouchers, and approved payments.
- Maintain updated supplier and customer accounts.
- Follow up on outstanding receivables and guest/company balances.
- Reconcile supplier statements and resolve discrepancies promptly.
Bank, Cash & Payroll Support
- Prepare bank reconciliations and monitor cash movements.
- Support petty cash management and ensure proper documentation of expenses.
- Assist with payroll preparation by verifying attendance, deductions, and payroll inputs.
- Ensure all cash handling procedures comply with hotel policies.
Compliance & Internal Controls
- Ensure compliance with hotel financial policies, tax requirements, and local statutory regulations in Sierra Leone.
- Maintain proper filing of accounting documents, invoices, receipts, and contracts.
- Assist with internal and external audits by providing required documentation.
- Report any financial irregularities or control weaknesses to Accounts Manager.
Inventory & Procurement Support
- Support stock counts for food, beverage, housekeeping, maintenance, and store items.
- Reconcile inventory records with physical counts.
- Review purchase requests, delivery notes, and supplier invoices for accuracy.
- Work with relevant staff members to ensure proper cost control and stock management.
Experience and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
- At least 2 years of accounting experience in the hospitality sector, preferably in a hotel, resort, lodge, guest house, or restaurant environment.
- Good knowledge of hotel revenue streams, POS systems, front office billing, inventory, and cost control.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software.
- Knowledge of tax and statutory compliance requirements in Sierra Leone is an advantage.
- Relevant professional certification is an advantage.
