Purpose

An international school in Sierra Leone is seeking a qualified and compassionate School Nurse to support student health, safety and wellbeing across a vibrant and diverse learning environment. 

The School Nurse plays a vital role in promoting health, safety and wellbeing of all students and staff within a diverse school community. This position is responsible for delivering high quality nursing care, managing day to day health needs, and supporting the implementation of health and safety protocols across the campus. Working closely with school leadership, the school nurse also contributes to health education and fosters a safe, supportive environment for learning. 

 

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care and First Aid

  • Provide day to day basic health care and first aid to students and staff, such as treatment for minor injuries, fever, stomach pain or other common ailments. 
  • Administer medication to students as prescribed by their doctors and with their parent’s consent, keeping simple, clear records of all treatments given. 
  • Respond calmly and effectively in emergencies, providing immediate care, including CPR/AED, and liaising with the school’s leadership to support transportation to a hospital/clinic if needed. 
  • Support conditions with ongoing conditions like asthma, malaria or allergies, under guidance from supervisors or with training as needed. 
  • Play an active role in a Team Around the Child (TAC) approach to support learners who have co-occurring health challenges.
  • Assist with routine annual medical checks for staff and learners, under guidance from the school leadership or health partners. 

 

Health Records and Communication

  • Maintain up to date and confidential records of students’ and staff medical needs and conditions. 
  • Keep clear records of student health concerns, medications and any visits to the school clinic/nurse’s station. 
  • Maintain all relevant medical records, including immunisation status, health concerns and care plans. 
  • Help follow up with parents about their child’s health needs or concerns raised during the school day. 
  • Share health updates with the school leadership and escalate serious issues as relayed in the school’s policy. 

 

Student Wellbeing and Safeguarding

  • Work alongside the Designated Safeguarding Lead and other staff to observe and report any concerns about a student’s wellbeing. 
  • Share any worries about students who appear unwell, withdrawn, neglected or at risk, following the school’s child protection guidance. 
  • Attend school provided training to better understand how to support students’ emotional and physical safety. 

 

Health Education and Awareness

  • Encourage students to practice good hygiene, hand washing and healthy habits through simple classroom talks or during health weeks. 
  • Participate in school health campaigns and help organic basic health checks or information sessions. 
  • Stay informed of local and national health alerts (i.e. MoH Bulletins).

 

Health and Safety Support

  • Ensure the school clinic is stocked with basic supplies and ready for daily use, school trips and schools’ activities.
  • Attend school sports fixtures as an onsite nurse to treat any sports related injuries.
  • Support senior staff in reviewing health related procedures and participate in staff trainings when available. 

 

Qualifications and Experience 

 

  • Must be a State Registered Nurse with the Nurses and Midwives Board of Sierra Leone. 
  • Minimum of 4 years’ practical experience in nursing, ideally including working with children. 
  • Public health training or experience is an advantage, particularly in prevention, hygiene and health awareness. 
  • Certification in First Aid, CPR and AED (for adults and children) is required. 
  • Prior experience in a school, NGO, multi-cultural clinical environment is desirable but not required.

  • Professional demeanour, including appropriate dress, punctuality, and behaviour aligned with the school’s values.
  • Commitment to continuous learning, including adapting to school-based systems and participating in safeguarding and public health training.

 

Working Hours

  • Full-time, on-site role based in Freetown- Working Hours 07:30-16:00, Mon-Friday
