About Rainforest Builder (SL) Ltd:

Rainforest Builder (SL) Ltd is a forest restoration company which has been operating in Sierra Leone since 2023. Our vision is to restore 100,000 hectares of forest in the country. These activities will result in the storage of carbon, improved biodiversity and social upliftment through leasing of land, employment, community development and benefit sharing. Some areas will be utilised for sustainable timber production for sustainable employment. The company commenced operations in July 2023 and has set up an initial platform to increase restoration activities to achieve 10,000 ha per year by 2030.

Key Purpose: 

Senior GIS and Drone Officer you would be the brain and eyes of the operation. The candidate would be responsible for mapping land that has been leased from communities and planning and subsequently monitoring ongoing forestry/restoration activities. The Senior GIS and Drone Officer will own the company’s spatial database. Subject to the role development trajectory, the candidate will be involved in designing and rolling out Rainforest Builder’s proprietary forestry system the Chameleon Platform. 

This is an exciting position with high levels of future career growth expected. The Senior GIS and Drone Officer will work with some of the leading scientists in space globally (e.g. Rainforest Builder’s Chief Scientist Dr James Gilroy and Senior Data Scientist Dr Simon Mills) and the candidate skills will develop at whatever pace he/she can handle.

 

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Land Cover: Drone and satellite imagery analysis of leased areas to inform planning and to support certification under VERRA CCB. 
  • Planning: Design planting compartments and road networks to maximize access and minimize road maintenance. 
  • Quality Control: Responsible for Quality Control of Rainforest Builder’s operations, managing a team to carry out regular randomized control points of forestry activities. 
  • Data Management: Manage the company’s spatial database to track activities and growth in planted areas over time.
  • Remote sensing: Responsibility for Rainforest Builder’s Project Eagle Eye: regular drone and remote sensing monitoring of our restored area to check for encroachment or damage in real-time.

 

Qualifications and Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in GIS, Forestry, Geography or a related field.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience applied GIS experience with a proven track record of success.
  • Excellent in GIS and other relevant planning software.
  • Proficient in flying drones and analysing drone data (drone pilot qualification not required but desirable). 
  • Some experience or curiosity to learn advanced analytical techniques such as machine learning.

  • Ability to analyse and interpret data and information quickly. 
  • Proactive and strategic approach with the ability to prioritise and plan ahead.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • Sound knowledge of drones and operations and decision-making abilities. 
  • Proficient in MS Office.
