Key purpose 

This role will oversee financial operations, reporting, and compliance requirements of the company. The Financial Controller will play a critical role in ensuring the integrity of financial information, supporting strategic decision-making, and team building and leading of the finance team to drive operational excellence.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Financial Management: cash flow oversight, managing accounting, payment and treasury functions, ensuring financial accuracy.
  • Reporting: preparing financial statements, management reports, grant reports, and compliance documents, working with our external bookkeeper.
  • Budgeting and Forecasting: developing and monitoring budgets, conducting variance analysis, and preparing financial forecasts.
  • Internal Controls: implementing controls, mitigating risks, and developing policies.
  • Compliance: overseeing tax filings, ensuring adherence to laws and standards.
  • System Optimization: maintaining and improving financial systems and processes.
  • Collaboration: supporting other departments with team-based budgets and aligning with organisational goals.
  • Treasury and Working Capital: Manage banking relationships, liquidity buffers and working capitals to strengthen cash position. 
  • Intercompany and Consolidation: coordinate intercompany recharges, eliminations and multi-entity, multi-currency consolidation where applicable.  

 

Leadership & Process Improvement 

  • Work collaboratively with departments and Senior Management to develop viable financial and operational plan and SOPs 
  • Build and lead finance and accounting team, providing guidance and support in team’s performance management
  • Develop professional development plan for the team, including on the job trainings based on skills gap analysis 
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with other departments to foster a culture of accountability, accuracy and continuous improvement
  • Implement best practices for reporting, controls, and data integrity
  • Guide and deliver a simple automation and fit for purpose tools to increase efficiency, strengthen controls, and improve data quality.

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of all inter-company accounts within the Group.
  • Monitor cash flow, liquidity, and financial performance metrics to identify risks, cost saving opportunities, and areas for improvement.
  • Review and approve journal entries, adjustments, and reconciliations to ensure accuracy and compliance with accounting standards.
  • Lead the preparation of budget, monitor variances and provide actionable insights to management.
  • Manage month-end and year-end closing processes and generate financial reports and statements.

Compliance & Internal Control

  • Analyse and resolve accounts irregularities and discrepancies and implement strict procedures to prevent mismanagement of cash and assets
  • Generate monthly reports in compliance with regulatory and company’s standards
  • Liaise with external auditors, regulators, and tax authorities to ensure compliance with tax regulations and company’s policies

 

Education and Knowledge:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (Master’s or MBA preferred).
  • Professional certification (CPA, ACCA, CFA, or equivalent) required. 
  • Minimum of 7–10 years of progressive financial management experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • At least two positions within a private sector role in a similar context to Sierra Leone.
  • Proven track record in accounting, budgeting/forecasting and financial analysis.
  • Experience with introducing and implementing ERP systems and financial reporting tools.
